Once you login to salesforce.com with username and password click on your name in home page or in chatter post then you can update your picture and about me section as
you can switch off chatter email notification
you can check your own chatter updates in home page and those of records you follows.
also check status updates people you follow in home page.you can use nice view of recently created ,viewed,modified
